Every baby grows at their own pace, and shoe sizing varies between brands. In Australia sizing can be very inconsistent. It is a good idea to always measure your babies foot to determine the right size.
Podiatrists recommend the shoe be 1cm longer than your babies foot. Here are a few suggestions to achieve an accurate measurement:
- Stand your baby on a piece of paper and mark the tip of their longest toe and their heel on the paper. Measure this distance with a ruler. If your baby can not stand you can sit them on your lap with their knee bent and foot flat on the floor.
- Place your babies foot on your arm and mark the length. This may be more effective if they curl or twist their foot when you place it on the paper (in suggestion 1)
- If those options fail – try paint! The old footprint will give you a very good impression and you can measure accurately.
You want to measure the distance from heel to the tip of the longest toe. This will give you a very accurate measurement and ensure you toddlers foot is not being squashed.
